Thanks to a new friend, Janan & I attended the Diwali Festival here in Tucson tonight. The evening was, literally, heavenly. Eighty degrees, clear skies, a blanket of stars overhead, live Indian music, fresh vegetarian food, beautiful dancing and fun activities for the kids.
I have never attended a Diwali Festival before, so I was interested to learn more. This sacred day, celebrated by those of the Hindu, Sikh & Jainism faiths is also called the Festival of Lights.
For those here in Tucson, it celebrates the return of Lord Rama from exile and now stands for triumph of good over evil. It's also a celebration of the light within us all as we strive for peace.
The festival was held at the Chaitanya Cultural Center; a beautiful retreat housing one of my favorite Tucson restaurants, Govinda's.
We'll definitely plan on atteding next year!
